Sacramento Republic FC earned a 1-0 victory over Oakland Roots SC on Friday night, with Mayele Malango's second-half strike proving the difference in this USL Championship clash.
The first half produced no goals, as neither side managed to find a breakthrough before the interval. The contest remained tight and scoreless through 45 minutes, with both teams heading into the break level.
The deadlock was broken in the 56th minute. Malango finished off a chance created by Jose Casas de Abadal to put Sacramento ahead, and from that point, Republic FC had something to protect. Oakland pressed for an equalizer but couldn't find one, and the visitors managed the remainder of the match effectively.
Sacramento's Daniel Crisostomo picked up a yellow card in the 85th minute as the away side looked to see out the final stages. No red cards were issued, and the match finished without further incident.
The win gives Sacramento Republic FC three valuable points on the road against a regional rival, a result that could carry significant weight as the season pushes deeper into the summer months.
