Tampa Bay Rowdies secured a 1-0 victory at New Mexico United on Wednesday night, with Louis Pérez's fifth-minute strike proving the difference in a bad-tempered USL Championship contest.

Pérez needed less than five minutes to put the Rowdies ahead, finishing off a pass from Mattheus to give the visitors an early cushion they would never relinquish. It was a clinical start from Tampa Bay, who had already picked up a yellow card through Nathan Dossantos in the third minute before the goal even arrived.

New Mexico pushed for a response but struggled to break down a disciplined Rowdies rearguard. Frustration set in quickly. Christopher Gloster was booked in the 18th minute, and Zico Bailey followed him into the referee's notebook on 37 minutes — the same minute Pérez, the goalscorer, also received a caution.

The second half brought more of the same. Greg Hurst and Valentin Noël were both cautioned within a minute of each other shortly after the restart, and the cards kept coming. In total, the referee brandished 11 yellows across the 90 minutes — six to New Mexico, five to Tampa Bay — in a match that grew increasingly ragged as the hosts chased an equalizer that never came.

Niko Hämäläinen and Ousman Jabang were among those cautioned late on for New Mexico, while Tampa Bay's Charlie Ostrem and Evan Conway picked up bookings in the final minutes as the Rowdies saw the game out.

The result hands Tampa Bay a valuable three points on the road and compounds a difficult spell for New Mexico United, who were left with nothing to show for a night defined more by indiscipline than quality.
