The match got off to a feisty start. Rhode Island's Grant Stoneman was shown a yellow card inside two minutes, setting an early tone for a physical contest. Despite the early booking, it was the hosts who found the breakthrough. Nodarse finished off a chance created by Jojea Kwizera in the 20th minute to put Rhode Island FC ahead.

Hartford struggled to fashion a meaningful response before halftime. Beverly Makangila picked up a caution in the 41st minute, and Abdullah Taofeek followed him into the referee's notebook just before the break.
