Oakland Roots SC left it late to steal all three points on the road, beating Monterey Bay FC 1–0 thanks to a Mark Fisher strike in the 85th minute.

The first half offered little in the way of decisive action, though tensions simmered. Monterey Bay's Giorgi Lomtadze picked up a yellow card in the 41st minute, setting the tone for what became a fractious evening for the hosts.

The second half followed a similar pattern — neither side able to break the deadlock, but Monterey Bay's discipline deteriorating by the minute. Kelsey Egwu was cautioned in the 59th minute, and Joel Garcia followed into the referee's notebook in the 77th. Luka Malesevic made it four yellows for the home side when he was booked in the 82nd minute. Oakland's David Garcia also saw yellow in the 70th minute, but the card count told the broader story: Monterey Bay were losing their composure.

Three minutes after Malesevic's booking, Oakland made them pay. Fisher found the back of the net in the 85th minute to give the Roots a crucial lead. Monterey Bay, already rattled, had little time or temperament to mount a meaningful response, and Oakland saw out the remaining minutes to secure the victory.

It was a frustrating night for Monterey Bay, who accumulated four bookings and came away with nothing to show for their effort. Oakland Roots, meanwhile, earned a valuable early-season away win that could prove significant as the USL Championship campaign takes shape.
