Detroit City FC ground out a 1–0 victory over Rhode Island FC in USL Championship action on Saturday, with Darren Smith netting the only goal of the match in the 56th minute.

The first half offered little separation between the two sides, though tensions began to surface. Detroit's Carlos Herrera was cautioned in the 23rd minute, and Rhode Island's Nicholas Scardina picked up a yellow before the break as well. Grant Stoneman joined him in the book on 55 minutes as the match grew increasingly fractious.

Then came the decisive moment. Just a minute after Stoneman's booking, Smith latched onto a pass from Kobe Hernández-Foster and found the net to give Detroit City the lead. It was a clinical finish at a crucial time.

What followed was a stretch of sustained frustration from Rhode Island. The visitors collected three more yellow cards in the space of four minutes — Aldair Sanchez in the 61st, Karifa Yao in the 62nd, and Zachary Herivaux in the 65th. Five cautions in total for Rhode Island painted a picture of a team struggling to respond within the laws of the game. Despite the desperation, none of those bookings escalated to a sending-off, and Rhode Island managed to finish with eleven on the pitch.

Detroit City, for their part, held firm after taking the lead. Rhode Island's ill-discipline only made that task easier, disrupting any rhythm the visitors might have built in search of an equalizer.

The three points bolster Detroit City FC's push in the USL Championship standings as the regular season enters its final stretch.
