Detroit City FC edged Birmingham Legion FC 1–0 on Saturday night, with Kobe Hernández-Foster's first-half strike proving the difference in a tight USL Championship contest.

Hernández-Foster broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, giving Detroit a lead they would not relinquish. The goal settled the home side early, and they controlled much of the opening half without adding to the scoreline. Maximiliano Rodríguez picked up a yellow card in the 29th minute, the first of several cautions in a match that grew increasingly scrappy as it wore on.

Birmingham pushed for an equalizer after the break but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Peter-Lee Vassell was booked in the 58th minute, and teammate Gevork Diarbian followed him into the referee's notebook in the 75th minute as the Legion's frustration mounted. Alex Dalou received a caution for Detroit in the 82nd minute as the home side dug in to protect their slim advantage.

The final minutes were fractious. Yellow cards in stoppage time for Birmingham's Samuel McIllhatton and Detroit's Darren Smith underlined the intensity of the closing stages, but neither side could alter the scoreline. Birmingham simply could not find a way through, and Detroit saw out the result with relative composure.

The win gives Detroit City FC three valuable points as the USL Championship season enters its final stretch, keeping their postseason aspirations firmly alive heading into October.
