Sporting JAX snatched all three points on the road at Fort Lauderdale United FC, winning 1-0 thanks to a late strike from Baylee DeSmit in the 89th minute to settle a tight USL Super League contest on Saturday.

The first half produced little in the way of decisive action, with neither side able to find a breakthrough. The game's edginess began to surface after the break, as Sporting JAX's Maggie Illig picked up a yellow card in the 50th minute, followed by Fort Lauderdale's Emily Thompson six minutes later. The bookings reflected a cagey, physical second half in which neither team was willing to give an inch.

For long stretches, a goalless draw looked the likeliest outcome. Fort Lauderdale were organized enough to keep Sporting JAX at bay but lacked the cutting edge to capitalize on home advantage. That defensive resilience eventually cracked, though. With the clock winding down, DeSmit found the net in the 89th minute to stun the hosts and send the traveling contingent into celebration.

Fort Lauderdale's frustration boiled over immediately. Shea Moyer was booked moments after the goal, and Haley Thomas followed into the referee's notebook deep in stoppage time as the home side's discipline frayed in the dying moments.

It was a gut punch for Fort Lauderdale, who had done enough defensively for 88 minutes to earn a point but were left empty-handed. For Sporting JAX, the smash-and-grab victory away from home could prove invaluable as the Super League season takes shape.
