The opening half was a cagey affair, with San Antonio's Alexis Souahy picking up a yellow card in the 31st minute for a foul that set the tone for a physical contest. Neither side could break the deadlock in regular first-half play, but Suarez struck just before the interval, finishing from a Dmitri Erofeev feed in the fourth minute of added time to give San Antonio a 1–0 lead heading into the break.
