Statesville FC cruised to a 3–0 home victory over Charlottetowne Hops FC on Saturday, with all three goals coming as own goals from Charlottetowne's D. Carroll in the 47th, 80th, and 90th minutes — a nightmarish afternoon for the Hops defender.

The first half was a scoreless affair, though not without incident. Charlottetowne's C. Zapata picked up a yellow card in the 35th minute as tensions began to build. Neither side managed to break through before the interval.

That changed almost immediately after the restart. Carroll turned a ball into his own net just two minutes into the second half, handing Statesville a 1–0 lead they had done little to threaten before the break. Statesville's N. Slack was cautioned in the 55th minute, but the hosts remained comfortable with their advantage.

Carroll's misery deepened in the 80th minute when he diverted another effort past his own goalkeeper to double Statesville's lead. Two minutes earlier, teammate J. Gutierrez had been booked, and the Hops were visibly rattled. The hat trick of own goals was completed in the 90th minute — Carroll again the unfortunate figure — moments before L. Poder received a late yellow card for Charlottetowne as frustrations boiled over in the closing seconds.

Three own goals from a single player in one match is almost unheard of at any level, and Carroll will want to put this one behind him quickly.

The comprehensive win gives Statesville FC a significant boost in the NPSL standings and piles pressure on a Charlottetowne Hops side left to regroup after a deeply forgettable outing.
