Loudoun United FC and New Mexico United played out a goalless draw in the USL Championship on Saturday, a result that will frustrate the hosts more than the visitors given the circumstances.

The match turned contentious early. New Mexico's Joseph Quiah picked up a yellow card in the 10th minute, then collected a second just 21 minutes later, leaving his side to play the final hour with ten men. Despite the numerical advantage, Loudoun failed to find a breakthrough.

The first half grew scrappy after Quiah's dismissal. Loudoun's Boluwatife Akinyode was cautioned in the 42nd minute as both sides struggled to keep discipline. The second half followed a similar pattern — plenty of effort, nothing to show for it in front of goal.

New Mexico settled into their rearguard action and dealt with whatever Loudoun threw at them. Kwame Awuah was booked in the 78th minute for the home side, and the closing stages saw tempers flare further. Dennis Sanchez and Kristopher Shakes were both cautioned for New Mexico in the 88th minute, while Luther Archimède joined them in the book deep in stoppage time. The referee handed out seven yellows across the 90-plus minutes.

For New Mexico, a point on the road with ten men for the majority of the match represents a solid defensive effort. For Loudoun, the inability to capitalize on an hour-long man advantage at home is the kind of missed opportunity that defines a season — and not in a good way.
