Oakland Roots SC and San Antonio FC played out a goalless draw in USL Championship action on Saturday, with neither side able to find a breakthrough across 90 minutes at home for Oakland.
The first half was a scrappy affair. Oakland's Thomas McCabe picked up a yellow card in the 30th minute, and San Antonio's Lilian Ricol followed him into the referee's notebook just before halftime in the 43rd minute. Neither team managed to convert any chances of note before the break.
San Antonio's discipline issues continued early in the second half. Nelson Blanco Flores was cautioned in the 49th minute, leaving the visitors with two players walking a disciplinary tightrope. Santiago Patiño added a third San Antonio booking late on, further evidence of a physical contest that produced more fouls than clear-cut opportunities.
Despite San Antonio accumulating three yellow cards over the course of the match, Oakland could not capitalize on any resulting set pieces or momentum shifts. The Roots struggled to create enough going forward, and the clean sheet for San Antonio's defense will be the main positive the visitors take from the trip to Northern California.
The point does little to dramatically alter the picture for either club as the regular season winds toward its conclusion, though both teams will feel opportunities were missed to claim all three points.
