Spokane Velocity FC and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC played out a 1–1 draw in USL League One on Wednesday night, with Luis Gil opening the scoring in the 14th minute before Jonas Fjeldberg equalized for the visitors in the 30th, finishing from a Sam Williams assist. Colorado Springs claimed the bonus point by winning the ensuing penalty shootout 5–4.

Gil's early strike gave Spokane a bright start, but the lead lasted just 16 minutes. Fjeldberg latched onto Williams' delivery to level things, and the teams went into halftime locked at one apiece. Jack Denton picked up a yellow card for Spokane in the 43rd minute, the only booking of the first half.

Neither side could find a winner in the second half despite the match stretching deep into stoppage time. Leigh Veidman was cautioned in the 90th minute for Spokane as tensions rose late.

With the score still level, the match moved to a penalty shootout. Colorado Springs struck first through Adrien Pérez before Nil Vinyals replied for Spokane. Juan Tejada and Joe Gallardo traded successful spot kicks, as did Jon-Talen Maples and Andre Lewis, then Sadam Masereka and Neco Brett — keeping things deadlocked at 4–4 through four rounds. Christian Herrera was booked during the shootout for Colorado Springs, but it was Khori Bennett who stepped up in the fifth round and converted to hand the Switchbacks a 5–4 shootout victory after Spokane failed to convert their final attempt.

The result means both teams take a point from the draw, but Colorado Springs walk away with the extra shootout point — a margin that could prove significant as the season enters its stretch run.
