Portland Hearts of Pine held off a second-half Rhode Island FC fightback to claim a 2–1 victory in USL League One action on Saturday. Matteo Kidd and Ollie Wright scored inside the opening half hour for the hosts, while Logan Dorsey pulled one back for Rhode Island after the break.

Portland wasted no time getting on the scoresheet. Just three minutes in, Kidd finished from an Ollie Wright delivery to give the home side an early cushion. The fast start set the tone, and Wright himself doubled the advantage in the 27th minute, this time as the scorer rather than the provider. Rhode Island struggled to gain any foothold in the first half and went into the break two goals down with plenty of work ahead of them.

The visitors came out with more urgency after halftime, though Jojea Kwizera picked up a yellow card in the 48th minute. Rhode Island's persistence paid off in the 61st minute when Dorsey converted from an Amos Shapiro-Thompson pass to cut the deficit in half and inject life into the contest.

Portland's Titus Washington was cautioned in the 67th minute as the hosts dealt with mounting Rhode Island pressure. The final stretch became a test of nerve for Portland, who had to manage the game carefully after their comfortable lead was halved. They did enough, though, seeing out the remaining minutes without conceding again.

The three points move Portland Hearts of Pine up the table in what is shaping up to be a tightly contested USL League One season.
