The first half produced little in the way of decisive action, though tensions simmered. Alexandria's D. Mercado picked up a yellow card right before the break in the 45th minute, the first caution of the afternoon.
The deadlock broke shortly after the hour mark when Fabiyi turned the ball into his own net, handing the Reds a lead they would not relinquish. DMV Elite pushed for an equalizer in the minutes that followed, but frustration crept in quickly — J. Vandehei was booked in the 68th minute, just four minutes after the own goal.
The visitors continued to press as the clock wound down but could not find a way through. A. Zarate received a yellow card in the 90th minute as DMV Elite's desperation turned scrappy in the closing stages. Three of the match's four bookings belonged to the away side, reflecting a second half that got away from them after conceding.
Alexandria Reds held firm to claim all three points in a game that lacked quality but not consequence. The narrow victory gives the Reds valuable momentum in the NPSL season as they look to build consistency in the weeks ahead.
