Santa Cruz found the opener in the 66th minute before J. De Souza De Aquino put the ball into his own net in the 73rd to double the hosts' advantage.

The first half was tight and testy. Referee's cards started flying early, with F. Taylor and P. Vasic both cautioned in the 24th minute after a flashpoint. New Haven's K. Lundstrom Svahnqvist followed into the book at the 38th minute, and teammate K. Charris picked up a yellow just a minute later. M. Prata added another New Haven caution early in the second half. By that point, the visitors had already collected five bookings — a clear sign of mounting frustration.

Santa Cruz capitalized on that indiscipline.
