Orange County SC and Sacramento Republic FC played out a 1–1 draw in USL Championship action on Saturday, with Christopher Hegardt opening the scoring in the 61st minute before Aaron Essel equalized late for the visitors in the 83rd.

The first half produced little in the way of goals but carried an edge. Sacramento's Tyler Wolff picked up an early booking in the 19th minute, setting a physical tone that would persist throughout the contest. Neither side could find a breakthrough before the break, though, and the teams headed in level.

Orange County finally broke the deadlock midway through the second half. Hegardt latched onto a pass from Ryan Doghman and finished to put the hosts ahead in the 61st minute. The goal seemed to spark the match into life — and not always for the right reasons. Daniel Crisostomo was cautioned for Sacramento in the 71st minute, followed by Orange County's Ousmane Sylla four minutes later and teammate Stephen Kelly in the 79th.

Sacramento made the most of those chaotic minutes. Memo Rodríguez picked out Essel in the 83rd minute, and the midfielder converted to drag Republic FC level. Orange County pushed for a late winner but couldn't find one. Tom Brewitt collected a yellow card deep in stoppage time as frustration crept in for the home side.

The draw does neither team many favors in a congested USL Championship standings picture, with both clubs dropping two points they'll feel they could have claimed.
